ACS International School Cobham
On a gloriously sunny afternoon, the Educatus Explorer visited ACS Cobham and immediately understood why so many international and local families are drawn to the school. Approaching the campus feels less like arriving at a traditional school and more like stepping into a welcoming village-style community, with expansive grounds, exceptional facilities and a calm, student-centred atmosphere throughout.
Spread across a 128 acre beautifully maintained site, ACS Cobham combines outstanding academic and co-curricular opportunities with a strong emphasis on wellbeing, creativity and personalised learning. The campus itself is incredibly impressive in scale, and we highly recommend viewing the drone footage below to fully appreciate the setting and facilities on offer.
Early Years designed around exploration and independence
One of the standout areas of the school is its exceptional Early Years provision. Younger children benefit from their own dedicated “village”, carefully designed to encourage independence, creativity and play-based learning from the very beginning of their educational journey.
Children have free-flow access between indoor and outdoor learning spaces, with a Forest School located within sight of the main buildings, an extensive wooden adventure play area and a beautiful walled garden complete with seating and shaded canopies. The environment feels immersive, calm and incredibly nurturing, allowing children to build confidence naturally through exploration and hands-on learning.
The sense of community extends to parents too. A welcoming café and adjoining playground create a relaxed meeting point for families before and after drop-off, helping new families settle quickly and build connections within the school community.
Boarding, wellbeing and pastoral care
For students aged 13 and above, ACS Cobham offers boarding within two well-appointed boarding houses, each supported by dedicated house parents available 24 hours a day. Accommodation includes twin en-suite bedrooms alongside single rooms for older students, creating a balance of independence, comfort and support.
Student wellbeing is clearly prioritised across the entire school. An on-site Medical Centre sits at the heart of the campus near the boarding houses and is accessible to the wider school community. During our visit, we also learned about the development of a newly refurbished space called the Nexus, which will include tiered seating, breakout rooms and a café-style communal space designed to provide students with a calm and supportive environment.
The school also demonstrated a particularly strong commitment to inclusion and SEND support. Their experienced SEN team works closely with families to provide tailored support through small groups, in-class assistance and one-to-one provision where required for both SEN and EAL needs, in particular for families relocating to the UK. Open and honest communication with parents is strongly encouraged to ensure each child receives the best possible support in order for them to succeed. The school even boasts an on-site Educational Psychologist to evaluate children of different needs and ensure they can be provided with the best support available at the school.
Creativity and performance opportunities
Creativity is deeply embedded within life at ACS Cobham. The school boasts a large professional-standard theatre complete with cinema-style seating and an impressive sound and lighting booth, allowing students to become involved in productions both on stage and behind the scenes. A wide variety of performances take place throughout the year, showcasing talent from across the school community.
The music facilities are equally impressive. Bright and spacious music rooms are exceptionally well resourced, housing a wide range of instruments including gamelan, alongside numerous soundproofed practice rooms. Students can also access individual instrumental lessons with specialist teachers before school, after school or during the school day for an additional fee.
Flexible academic pathways (including AP and IB) with a global outlook
Academically, ACS Cobham places strong emphasis on flexibility and future readiness. Students are able to study within different academic frameworks, with the school carefully supporting pupils to ensure subject choices keep future pathways open for university destinations around the world. They offer the globally renowned IB programme as well as the flexible Advanced Placement programme providing students with a choice of pathways depending on their interest and study choices.
Class sizes are intentionally small, capped at 22 students with most classes averaging between 16 and 18 pupils. This creates a highly personalised learning environment where teachers are able to build strong relationships with students and tailor support to individual learning styles and ambitions.
Beyond the classroom, students are encouraged to explore a huge range of clubs and co-curricular activities, helping them develop new interests, friendships and confidence outside of academics.
Outstanding sports facilities and community access
Sport is another major strength of the school. ACS Cobham benefits from world-class facilities including a state-of-the-art sports centre, extensive outdoor pitches and courts, and a 25-metre swimming pool with an adjustable floor. Indoor facilities include expansive multi-use sports courts, a dance studio and a fully equipped fitness suite, which is also available for parental use outside of school hours.
The school’s commitment to community is particularly evident in the way it shares its facilities. Families are able to use the swimming pool and fitness centre at weekends, while local schools and community groups regularly access the grounds and facilities. Students can also participate in the World Games, an international schools’ sporting tournament which allows pupils to compete alongside students from around the world, in addition to local fixtures.
The school also provides a comprehensive transport and busing network (bus map here), helping make the campus accessible to families across the wider region.
A thoughtful approach to student wellbeing
Another aspect we found refreshing was the school’s balanced and thoughtful approach to technology use. Students place their phones into magnetic locked pouches during the school day, while older students may access devices for study purposes when appropriate. The emphasis is firmly on encouraging healthy self-regulation and balanced habits around technology, rather than simply restricting access.
Last thoughts
ACS Cobham presents itself as a warm, ambitious and globally minded school community with exceptional facilities and a strong focus on wellbeing. From its outstanding Early Years provision and impressive creative spaces to its flexible academic pathways and extensive sports facilities, the school offers students an environment where they are encouraged to thrive academically, socially and personally.
What stood out most during our visit was the genuine sense of community running throughout the campus. Despite its impressive scale, the school maintains a welcoming and supportive atmosphere where students and families alike feel connected, included and valued.
